When you’re a salesman, you have to go places. Talk to people. Move about. When you’re a father, you’re needed at home. Watching the kids grow, teaching them how to be a person and and all that. The two lifestyles are at odds.
And yet, that’s exactly the life our co-founder Mark lives. All day he’s pulled all kinds of ways - to client meetings, to day-care drop off, to the office, out of town to pitch to a potential new client, back home to put the kids to bed. It’s enough to send a man mad.
But he’s not mad. He’s doing alright actually. So, I had to ask, “How do you do it?”
He replied, “Flexibility.”
The thing about Yarno, is that it’s completely output based. It doesn’t matter where or when you do your work, as long as you do it. Mark’s hours are his own. He’ll leave work to get home in time to bath and put the kids to bed. Then he might whip out the laptop and catch up on whatever he still needs to do, before he catches his own z’s.
Or, he might have an out-of-office meeting around lunch. Instead of wasting time travelling to work again and then home again, he might just go home. Or he might work from a cafe nearby for a while. It doesn’t matter, it’s up to him.
Mark can do this because technology and the nature of the work means that he can work wherever he’s got a laptop and some wifi. However, there’s another reason that he can be out of the office and not worry that the whole business is going to come crashing down:
“We only hire A players. We take the time to make sure we only hire top quality people because no one is going to push an A player harder than themselves. When it’s in your nature to want to perform, having a boss micro-manage you doesn’t improve your performance. In fact, it probably discourages you, and stops you from putting in the extra effort because you’re not doing it for the right reasons. That’s always been our theory anyway, and it seems to be working so far.”
Mark doesn’t have to be in the office looking over everyone’s shoulders all the time because the work gets done anyway. Yarno’s got flexibility and productivity. Oh wow, we really are the dream team.
